Transforming parent-professional relationships: Understanding parental advocacy in practice

Many parents involved with children’s services report feeling marginalised and disempowered in their relationships with social workers. But what if there was a way to change this dynamic?

Join us for a one-hour webinar exploring the emerging field of parental advocacy, presenting research that has the potential to transform how families engage with children’s services and experience care proceedings.

Following recommendations from England’s recent Care Review, parental advocacy services are being piloted across local authorities. Drawing from successful models in the USA—where such services have helped reduce the number of children in care—these innovative approaches aim to give parents a stronger voice in decision-making and foster better relationships with professionals.

This webinar will present key findings from Swansea University’s Realist Informed Evaluation, which examined parental advocacy services across multiple local authority sites in England.

We’ll explore what makes these services effective, how they support parental involvement in crucial decisions, and their perceived impact on outcomes through the voices of parents, advocates, and other stakeholders.

Whether you are working in a local authority, within the family courts or in another part of the family justice system you’ll gain evidence-based insights into:

  • The ways parent advocacy is transforming parent-professional relationships
  • Real experiences and outcomes for families who participated in the study.
  • Implications for future service development and evaluation.
