Advice for individuals within the family justice system

The Nuffield Family Justice Observatory improves the lives of children and families by putting data and evidence at the heart of the family justice system. Unfortunately, we aren’t able to provide support or offer advice in individual cases. There are many organisations that do, and some of these are listed below.

If you are involved in care proceedings involving the local authority or adoption proceedings:

Become works to improve the lives of children in care and young care leavers, and has a freephone advice line.

Coram Children’s Legal Centre promote and protect the rights of children in the UK, and provide legal advice and representation for children and for parents.

Family Rights Group offer free and confidential advice to parents and other family members over the phone or through online discussion boards. They have extensive advice sheets, videos and FAQs on their website.

Kinship connects kinship carers with a national community and network of local support groups, to offer advice and support.

If you are involved in divorce proceedings, or a case about contact with your child, or where your child lives:

Advice Now has guides which help individuals who cannot get legal aid or afford a lawyer find their way through family court processes.

Cafcass (the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service), represent children in family court cases in England. They have a lot of detailed information on their website.

Dads Unlimited offer support and practical advice to fathers on the legal and emotional issues around separation/divorce and access to children.

Families Need Fathers helps fathers, mothers and grandparents to have personal contact and meaningful relationships with their children following parental separation, offering information, advice and support services.

Relate is the UK’s largest provider of relationship support, providing counselling around relationships, families, children and young people.

Resolution is a community of family justice professionals who work with families and individuals to resolve issues in a constructive way. This includes guidance for litigants in person on remote hearings in the family court.

Rights of Women offer clear and accessible information to women about the law and their legal rights.

Support Through Court support people who face court alone so that they can represent themselves to the best of their abilities.
